Fuel System Components

Fuel injection systems operate at high pressures - especially in heavy-duty diesel engines. The low relative velocities of interfacing components and the fact they fuel serves as the only lubrication media, makes this system a tribological challenge - with components operating in a mixed lubrication regime. These components have high tolerances - making wear reduction a performance critical factor. In addition, the components are heat-treated to a high core hardness, making it imperative to coat them at a low temperature.

All the factors above make DLC coatings an excellent choice for fuel injection system components, such as plungers, solenoids, thrust plates, needles etc. These coatings are extremely hard; have ultra-low coefficients of friction; can be deposited at temperatures under 180° C; and can be deposited with a high-degree of control of the coating thickness.
